I listened to a podcast recently where Daniel Bryan explained his idea for a run with the Intercontinental championship. It led me to conclude that it’s time to retire the United States championship for good.
For those who can remember to earlier this year, Bryan was IC champ before a concussion (again) put him on the shelf and he had to relinquish the title. He had some big dreams for that title, though... and when you think about it, the idea was brilliant in its simplicity.
Y’see, Bryan grew up in an era where the Intercontinental champion was the #2 man on the entire WWE roster. It wasn’t just a throw-away title or a way to try to get somebody over. It meant (most of the time, anyway) that you were in line for a run at the World title. It usually meant that the A touring brand had the world champ in the main event while the B touring brand had the IC champ on top.
